Can Cooler Size & Fit Guide: Standard 12oz, Slim Cans, Bottles, and More

You found the perfect design for your custom can cooler. But before you place your order, there's one question that trips people up more than any other: which size do I need?

Cans and bottles come in more shapes and sizes than ever before. A cooler that fits a classic Budweiser won't fit a White Claw, and neither one will fit a Topo Chico bottle. Ordering the wrong size means your coolers don't hug the drink properly — and that defeats the purpose.

This guide covers every common size so you can order with confidence.

Standard 12oz Can Coolers

Fits: Regular 12oz cans — the most common size in the U.S.

Typical can dimensions: About 4.83" tall × 2.6" in diameter.

Examples of drinks that fit:

  • Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sprite (standard cans)
  • Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light
  • Most craft beers in standard cans
  • La Croix (standard, not tall)
  • Monster Energy (regular 12oz, not the tall 16oz)

This is your go-to size. If you're ordering for a party, wedding, or corporate event and most people will be drinking standard cans, this is the one. It's also the most popular size for promotional giveaways because it fits what the majority of people are drinking.

Slim Can Coolers

Fits: Tall, slender cans — the fast-growing format that's become standard for seltzers, energy drinks, and many new beverages.

Typical can dimensions: About 6.125" tall × 2.25" in diameter.

Examples of drinks that fit:

  • White Claw Hard Seltzer
  • Truly Hard Seltzer
  • Red Bull (8.4oz and 12oz slim cans)
  • Michelob Ultra
  • Bon & Viv Seltzer
  • High Noon Sun Sips
  • Many canned wines and cocktails
  • Celsius Energy Drinks
  • Topo Chico Hard Seltzer

Why this size matters: Slim cans have exploded in popularity. If your event caters to a younger crowd or health-conscious drinkers, slim can coolers are essential. They're also a smart choice for bachelorette parties, beach days, and outdoor festivals where seltzers and canned cocktails are the drinks of choice.

Important note: A standard 12oz cooler will NOT fit a slim can properly — it'll be too loose and won't insulate well. Make sure you order the right one.

16oz Tall Can Coolers

Fits: Tallboy cans and pint-sized cans.

Typical can dimensions: About 6.19" tall × 2.6" in diameter.

Examples of drinks that fit:

  • Tallboy beers (16oz Pabst Blue Ribbon, Modelo, etc.)
  • Arizona Iced Tea (16oz cans)
  • Monster Energy (16oz standard)
  • Many craft brewery tallboys
  • Some larger sparkling water cans

When to choose this size: If you're ordering for a brewery, beer festival, or any event where tallboy cans are common, this is your pick. Tallboy coolers are also popular as premium gifts because they feel substantial and work with the craft beer crowd.

Bottle Coolers

Fits: Standard 12oz glass and plastic bottles.

Typical bottle dimensions: About 7–9" tall × 2.4" in diameter (varies by brand).

Examples of drinks that fit:

  • Beer bottles (Corona, Heineken, Sam Adams)
  • Glass soda bottles (Coca-Cola, Mexican Coke)
  • Water bottles (standard 16.9oz plastic)
  • Topo Chico glass bottles

Design consideration: Bottle coolers are typically taller and have a slightly different shape than can coolers. Some styles include a zippered closure or a wider opening to accommodate the bottle's neck and cap. Make sure to specify that you need a bottle cooler rather than a can cooler when ordering.

How to Choose the Right Size

Still not sure? Here's a simple process:

Step 1: Look at the drinks. Think about what people will actually be drinking at your event. If it's a mix, consider ordering two sizes — standard and slim covers about 90% of beverages.

Step 2: Check the can or bottle. The size is printed on every container. Look for "12 FL OZ," "12oz Slim," "16 FL OZ," etc.

Step 3: Measure if you're unsure. Grab the drink you want to fit and measure the height and diameter. Compare it against the dimensions listed above.

Step 4: When in doubt, ask us. Send us a message with the specific drink brand and size, and we'll tell you exactly which cooler fits it.

Quick Reference Chart

Cooler Size Can Height Can Diameter Common Drinks
Standard 12oz ~4.83" ~2.6" Beer, soda, sparkling water
Slim Can ~6.125" ~2.25" Seltzers, Red Bull, canned wine
16oz Tallboy ~6.19" ~2.6" Tallboy beer, Monster, Arizona
Bottle ~7–9" ~2.4" Beer bottles, glass soda, water

A Note on Fit

A well-fitted can cooler should feel snug around the drink — not so tight that it's hard to slide in, and not so loose that the can wobbles. The insulation works best when the cooler is in full contact with the can's surface.

All QualityPerfection can coolers are designed for a snug, secure fit in their respective sizes. Our collapsible design means they fold flat for easy storage and pop right back into shape when you need them.

Ordering Mixed Sizes

Hosting an event where people will bring a variety of drinks? You don't have to pick just one. Many of our customers order a split — for example, 75% standard and 25% slim — to make sure everyone's covered.

If you want to use the same design across both sizes, we can help with that. Just let us know and we'll make sure your artwork is optimized for each cooler size.

Not sure which size fits your drink? Send us a photo or the brand name and we'll match you with the right cooler.
