What is sublimation ?

Sublimation is a printing technique where heat and pressure are used to transfer dye onto materials, most often synthetic fabrics or specially coated surfaces. Unlike other methods that layer ink on top of a surface, sublimation turns dye into gas, allowing it to penetrate the material for a long-lasting, vibrant result.

Key Aspects of Sublimation Printing

  1. Process

    • Digital Design Printing: A design is first printed onto a special sublimation transfer paper using sublimation inks.
    • Heat and Pressure Transfer: The printed transfer paper is placed on the material, and a heat press is used to apply heat (usually between 350-400°F) and pressure.
    • Ink Sublimation: The heat turns the solid dye into gas, which then embeds itself into the fabric or coating as it cools and solidifies.
  2. Materials

    • Polyester and Polymer-Coated Surfaces: Sublimation works best on polyester fabrics or materials with a polymer coating, as these materials can hold the sublimated dye well.
    • Non-Fabric Items: Sublimation can also be used on items like ceramic mugs, metal plates, and phone cases, as long as they have a sublimation-friendly coating.
  3. Advantages

    • Vibrant, Long-Lasting Colors: The dye becomes part of the material, resulting in prints that are vibrant, fade-resistant, and durable.
    • All-Over Printing Capabilities: Sublimation is ideal for large, all-over designs because there’s no limitation on the print area, as with some other techniques.
    • No Feel or Texture: Since the dye is embedded into the fabric or surface, the design has no raised texture, resulting in a smooth finish.
  4. Limitations

    • Works Only on Light or White Surfaces: Sublimation dye does not show well on dark materials because it’s absorbed into the fabric, so it’s most effective on white or light-colored surfaces.
    • Requires Specific Materials: This process only works on polyester fabrics or specially coated items, so it’s not suitable for cotton or other natural fabrics.
  5. Uses

    • Sublimation printing is widely used for custom sportswear, promotional items, mugs, phone cases, and other novelty products where vivid colors and durability are desired. It’s especially popular for sports jerseys, due to its ability to cover large areas with seamless designs.

Sublimation is an ideal choice for vibrant, high-quality prints on polyester-based items and a variety of coated surfaces, offering durability and vividness that other printing techniques may not provide.
